New picnic set made from textile waste
Back in 2021, when Carsten Thor received an invitation from Tektilsymbiose in Herning to look at how it might be possible to find a new use for textile waste, it didn’t take him long to say yes. Learn more about his reasoning behind this decision and meet Minnie, the result of a year-long product development process.
”Harbour wood is a fantastic ressource. It is beautiful and full of soul. But the essential thing for me is not for us to work exclusively with harbour wood, but to work with reusing resources.
Therefore, it didn’t take Carsten long to decide to accept the invitation from Tekstilsymbiose in Herning, inviting him to take a look at how to find a use for textile waste.
Carsten could immediately see the possibilites of this new material. A material that not only offers a completely new kind of expression, but also new design possibilities compared to harbour wood. It does all this, whilst still allowing the possibility to create unique, sustainable products.
Since he started Thors Design Carsten has wanted to develop a piece of furniture for children. And whilst the robust reclaimed harbour wood invites to mostly larger more sturdy pieces, this new material has suddenly opened the door to some lighter designs and the possibility for some more elegant and versatile children’s furniture.
First of all, though – just a minor detail – the material needed to be developed.
”Harbour wood is a fantastic ressource. It is beautiful and full of soul. But the essential thing for me is not for us to work exclusively with harbour wood, but to work with reusing resources".
We are ambitious! The products function, form and feel needed to be absolutely on point. And we wanted the material to be as sustainable as possible. These are some of the great challenges that started the development process in our little company.
In the course of the last year, we have therefore tried a lot of different approaches and followed a number of different paths. Some ended up being a dead end, and some are still open.
Amongst other things, we want to develop a durable material for outdoor furniture, that still feels like textiles. And we have also had an idea, that the material used to bind the textiles together should be melted sand and therefore be as natural and clean a product as possible.
We still aim to do this. But we are also wiser now, and have decided that we probably should actually try to land on the moon before we jump to the stars. There is still a way to go with this process with both trials and development of the material concepts, before this can actually be done.
And to be honest, we think that the moon is a lovely place to land!
Therefore, we are proud to announce, that on the 15th February 2023, we will be launching ”Minnie”, our first design for children, made of textile waste.
Minnie is in fact a miniature of our classic Omega dining set, with a table top and benches made from compressed textile waste that has been bound together by plastic binder. In order to create a durable construction and an attractive finish, the frame is made with a clamping solution around the textile plank. Minnie allows space for 4-6 kindergarten children and is intended for use indoors, It is strong and stable. It can withstand the weight of an adult and won’t overturn.
Minnie is a unique piece and will vary in colour, depending on the colour of the textile waste, in use. Our prototype has been made from obsolete carpets from Dansk Wilton,
We hope that you will welcome Minnie!
